           Hello All -- it's the Sgt. again.

Today I post in honor of the greatest rhythm guitar player
ever, the GOAT, and the incomparable music he made for nearly 40 years which influenced tens of millions of
peoples' lives -- mine included. Of course, I'm talking about the incomparable Malcolm Young. 

 

When I purchased "Back In Black" hot off
my local record store's shelves in Summer 1980 -- my first copy was actually a store-bought cassette -- little did
I know I'd be entering a life-long, life-changing partnership with this band and its music. This is the band which
got me started playing guitar and this is the band I would crank full-volume for decades to come whenever I need a boost
or simply needed to rock out, through all the many stages, all the ups and downs, all the highs and lows. 

Rest In Peace, my friend. You made rock n' roll a huge part of so many of our lives.

should go without saying.

What you're looking at here is
a CD Audio tracks ripped from the DVD-V side of the "Back In Black" Dual Disc release. IMHO this is easily THE
BEST SOUNDING VERSION of this album that I've ever heard. And since it's easily one of the greatest hard rock
records in history, having the best sounding version seems like something worthwhile and worth sharing.

Yeah,
I know, I know... I have 'em all, too. The original release, the Remaster, the German Barry Diament, the Japanese
32XD. But I'm telling you, the DVD audio on this Dual Disc beats all of 'em.

Now trust me -- I did
not come to this conclusion casually. I got a deal on a copy, and when playing it found my head slowly turning...
"Wow. Does this sound as good as I think it does?" I wondered.

So I assembled a group of experts to
test out my theory -- long-time rockers/dope smokers/long-hairs/real-deal guitar players, several of whom work at a
professional recording studio, all of whom grew up on "Back In Black" and are old enough (like myself) to have
actually purchased it NEW (vinyl or cassette) when it originally came out in 1980.

 

"Hells Bells" didn't really sound that different. It
wasn't until the second track -- "Shoot to Thrill" -- that the lightbulbs started going on around the
room. This DID sound great. Really great. Next we moved to the A/B-ing process which soon convinced the lone hold-out --
head to head, this Dual Disc sounded the best.

What you should notice is this -- the brittle highs found on
the guitar tracks (especially the latest Remaster) have been knocked down, while both the mids and bass have been
deepened and cleaned up. For the first time the drums sound more alive ("Hey, check out the kick drum!"), the
bass is focused and sharp, and overall the album SIMPLY HAS MORE BALLS. It thumps where it's supposed to thump. It
sears and scorches where it's supposed to sear and scorch. And there's no muddy mid-range anywhere in the
mix.

But don't take my word for it -- check it out yourself and let me know.

Like many, when
I first heard the newer remasters I was devastated. I had hoped for some MFSL/Steve Hoffman-style revitalization of
"Back In Black" and ended up listening to a somewhat compressed mess IMHO -- another victim of the Loudness
War. Then I stumbled upon the Dual Disc, and finally heard more of what I knew had to be there all along.

The
back of the case reads "DVD SIDE -- ENTIRE ALBUM MASTERED IN SUPERIOR SOUND". For once, I think they're
